Starting tonight Downtown Auburn will host its version of a summertime party. Wednesday Night Live will start at 6 p.m. on High Street in Downtown Auburn. The event will feature Auburn native and jazz musician Jimmy Crockett as part of the duo Crocket and Jennings, who will play between 7 and 8:45 p.m. at the main stage located in the East Placer Street parking lot. Las Vegas entertainer Dave Johnson will also perform tonight at 7:30. The Wednesday event is the first in a series of six Wednesday Night Live gatherings planned for Downtown this summer. Each event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on High Street, which will be closed from 4 to 9:30 p.m. between Cleveland Avenue and East Placer Street. Each Wednesday will have a different theme with tonight’s being “Celebrate Auburn.” Future themes include “American Graffiti” and “American Heritage Night” during the week of the Fourth of July. Jim Crosthwaite, event coordinator, runs the Thursday Night Marketplace in Folsom and said he thought Auburn would be a good place for a similar event. “It’s a lot of fun to come out and see the rest of the community and see all the activities and booths,” Crosthwaite said. Bruce Cosgrove, chief executive officer of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, said the event is a good way to bring the community together and promote local businesses. Cosgrove said a little more than 50 vendors are signed up to offer their goods at the first event and other businesses along High Street and Lincoln Way are encouraged to extend their hours. “We’re constantly thinking Auburn first and this is one more opportunity for local residents to enjoy the Downtown ambience of the Auburn community and get to know the businesses that are here,” Cosgrove said. Linda Mason, co-owner of DogGone Good catering and Gray Dog Events, formerly Drooling Dog Bar BQ, said her catering company was one of the first to sign up for the Auburn event. “I’m really hoping it’s an event everyone will come down to,” Mason said. “It’s something to do in the summertime that’s not going to cost them a lot of money, they get to go out together and socialize with their neighbors.” Reach Jenifer Gee at jeniferg@goldcountrymedia.com. ---------- Music, food and games in Downtown What: Wednesday Night Live When: 6 to 9 p.m. tonight Where: High Street in Downtown Auburn.
