Richard Hanner, a veteran journalist with roots in Placer County, has been named editorial content director of Gold Country Media.

Hanner will have overall responsibility for all Gold Country Media publications, including the daily Auburn Journal, the company’s weekly papers and its niche publications.

Before joining Gold Country, Hanner served as editor of the Lodi News-Sentinel and an affiliated operation, Sentinel Media Services, which provides custom editorial products.

“Richard Hanner is known for his high-quality community journalism and concern for the quality of life in the communities he and his team have served in the Lodi area. I met Richard several years ago and believe he is a wonderful fit for our Auburn Journal and Gold Country Media content team. He already has strong local ties and knowledge of the area,” said William J. Brehm Jr., president of Brehm Communications Inc.

BCI is owner of the Gold Country Media cluster of community and specialty publications from Folsom, up to Auburn and Colfax along Interstate 80.
Hanner will report directly to Tom Kirk, regional publisher and the chief operations officer of BCI.

Hanner grew up in Loomis and is a graduate of Del Oro High School and Sierra Community College. He later graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in journalism and from Stanford University with a master’s degree in communications. Hanner is married to Judith Hayashida, a Placer County native and Del Oro graduate. They have two sons: Mitchell, an assignment editor for KCRA television, and Alex, an operations agent for Southwest Airlines in San Francisco.

Before joining the Lodi paper, he worked for the Palo Alto Times and The Record newspaper, based in Stockton.

“Joining Gold Country is a unique opportunity for me, both professionally and personally,” Hanner said. “I am eager to work with the talented team at Gold Country. I’m also looking forward to reconnecting with communities that are close to my heart.”

Hanner may be reached at or at (530) 852-0236.
