A former Kern County fire marshal with more than 30 years experience in public safety has been hired to develop a fire prevention plan for the Meadow Vista, Newcastle and Foresthill areas.

Vernell Brothers developed and implemented the Kern County hazard reduction program and will be doing the same for the targeted communities, Placer Hills Fire Chief Kirk Kushen said.

Brothers’ tasks will include putting in place a program that will reduce threats to life and property caused by wildfire.

The fire district was awarded a FEMA grant to establish the “desperately needed” fire marshal position and develop an innovative fire prevention program, Kushen said.

“With the recent catastrophic fires causing tremendous loss of lives and property impacting similar communities, proactively seeking new opportunities to reduce the inherent threats is going to improve safety in our areas,” Kushen said.
