Christmas relief for I-80 travelers?
It’s taking yet more time for the popular Gold Run rest area on Interstate 80 to open.
Shut to the public since May for wastewater and water treatment upgrades, the eastbound and westbound stops about 30 miles northeast of Auburn were to open in the early fall.
But the closings were extended because of unforeseen construction delays complicated by a wait for delivery of sewage processing and monitoring equipment.
The new target date is Dec. 19, if field testing and certification of the wastewater treatment system can be completed by then, Caltrans said.
During construction, motorists can pull off for a break at the eastbound and westbound Donner Summit rest areas, 36 miles east of Gold Run.
Caltrans is also warning that weather or other unexpected events may delay the opening further.
