Smartt named state’s Offensive Player of the Year
Former Del Oro quarterback Stone Smartt continues to excel at the next level.
As the QB for the Riverside City College, Smartt was named as the California Community College Football Coaches Association All-America Offensive Player of the Year this weekend.
Smartt, who led the Golden Eagles to their only state championship in 2015 as a junior and a return trip to the state final in 2016 as a senior, completed nearly 64 percent of his passes for 2,754 yards and 31 touchdowns to just three interceptions in 2018. Smartt also rushed for 583 yards with nine more scores with his legs.
Smartt led the Tigers to an 11-1 record, their only loss coming in the Southern California regional championship game to Ventura.
Joining Smartt on the CCCAA All-America First Team were a pair of Sierra College Wolverines.
Lincoln grad Ryan Graham, who averaged over 200 all-purpose yards per game, was named as the First-Team all-purpose player, and defensive back Will Brocchini repeated as an All-American selection for the Wolverines.
Graham led Sierra in both rushing (1,276) and receiving yards (783) with 24 total touchdowns in 2018. He even threw for a pair of scores. He went over 200-yards rushing twice this year and was the Grizzly Bowl MVP when he ran for 187 yards with two TDs in the 24-10 victory over Sacramento City College.
Brocchini, an alum of Whitney High School, was a ballhawk in the Wolverine secondary with a state-leading 11 interceptions. That number matched his freshman total from a year ago, giving him 22 career picks at Sierra College.
Both Smartt and Brocchini recently committed to play at the Division I level for Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Graham has received offers to play at the next level, including from the University of San Diego.
