Golden Eagles bag CIF Division I wrestling tourney titleBy: Mike Ray
Del Oro boys wrestling coach Clint Madden isn’t making predictions for his Golden Eagle grapplers going into this weekend’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet set for Friday and Saturday at Delta College in Stockton.
But coming off a winning performance at last weekend’s CIF Division I tournament at Franklin High in Elk Grove, where the Golden Eagles bagged a championship blue banner, Madden isn’t downplaying his team’s chances.
“We’re sending 12 wrestlers to the Masters, so we do have a shot at it,” said Madden. “There will be some good teams going for it. Vacaville, Pittman and Oakdale are all very tough.”
Del Oro sent seven wrestlers to the finals last weekend with five bagging crowns. Del Oro’s individual champions included Damion Elliott (115 pounds), Evan Ivaldi (128), Brenden Johnson (134), Jed Campos (147) and Noah Blake (162).
Finishing with runner-up medals were Eli Blake at 140 pounds and Adam Lowe at 197. The top six finishers from the Masters tournament will qualify for the CIF State Meet set for Feb. 21–23 in Bakersfield.
The Del Oro girls had a nice showing at the Divisional meet at Natomas High. Maicie Lockyer (143) and Mary Lubiens (170) each took first in their respective weight classes. Both Lady Eagles went 4-0 with four pinfalls each to claim the section titles.
Jasmine Guerrero took runner-up at 235 while Leila Sidhu (101) and Abigail Veske (189) each placed fourth overall. Charlotte Phillips (111), Jessica Beavers (150) and Jade Nelson (160) all placed seventh in their respective brackets.
