When Anna Locks-Morton was trying to find a theater that would host her 19-year-old son Sloane's musical, she had to look far and wide. She finally found it in the form of the Colfax Theater. Fast forward three months: the Morton family has purchased the theater, where they plan to offer movies, events, and house their own children's theater, Red Moon Community Children's Theatre, for ages 6-17.

"We bought the theater in order to support and engage the youth of our community using theater arts," said Morton. "Theater is an entire art form that embraces the process of growing up. It has the potential to teach kids to face all their angst, disappointment, achievements and successes, roll them together and channel those challenges. Theater is about embracing your fears, learning to be vulnerable, and tapping into the inner strength that we all possess."

The Mortons will be hosting a meet and greet noon - 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Colfax Theater. Attendees will have the chance to meet Janet Stegman, the founder and former director of Kids on Broadway of Santa Cruz County, who will be directing all of the children's theater. Children age 6-16 are welcome to sign up for a Broadway class and performance. Classes start Feb. 12.

There's quite a bit of legwork involved in overhauling the theater, but the Mortons are excited for a grand opening, which they hope to announce soon. Learn more at
