The Del Oro High boys wrestling team rolled up its sleeves and went to work at last Saturday’s Sierra Foothill league championship tournament held at Oak Ridge.

And when the dust had settled, the Golden Eagles had more than flexed their mat muscle by sending nine grapplers to the finals with six emerging with SFL championship medals.

In addition, the depth-laden Del Oro grapplers qualified 13 athletes to this weekend’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. IAA – Divisional championship set for Friday and Saturday at Pitman High School in Turlock.

“It was a very good showing by our wrestlers,” said Del Oro coach Clint Madden. “They knew what was at stake and they went out and did their jobs.”

Del Oro, the regular season SFL champion, will enter this weekend’s Div. IAA tournament as one of the favorites but Madden knows the competition will still be fierce.

“All of our SFL opponents will be there so that right there lets you know how tough the competition will be,” said Madden. “This meet here is all about moving on to the next level.”

Del Oro’s six champions included Antonio Lorenzo (106), Brendan Johnson (113),  J.T. Stinson (132) Will Costanzo (160),  Hunter Halvorson (220) and Pablo Miller (Hwyt.).

Lorenzo, who was named as the SFL’s outstanding wrestler, stayed undefeated on the season by pinning Max McCarver of Oak Ridge in the 106-pound title bout.

Johnson, meanwhile, also impressed at 113 pounds with his 9-0 major decision victory over Michael Rener of Oak Ridge.

In the 132 pound championship match, Stinson was tough for the Golden Eagles as he dispatched Ricky Mello of Oak Ridge, 6-0.

Will Costanzo continued his fine season for Del Oro with an 8-2 decision over Rocklin’s Hunter Gonzalez at 160 pounds.

The Golden Eagles then closed their solid showing when Halvorson stopped Folsom’s Kyle Richard with a pin at 220 pounds and Miller followed with a pin of Folsom’s Caleb Freeland to win the heavyweight division.

Finishing in runner-up spots for the Golden Eagles were Chase Patterson at 138 pounds, Kobe Woltz at 145 pounds and Noah Blake in the 152 pound weight class.
