Emergency responders searched below the Foresthill Bridge on Friday after a report of someone jumping off the span and striking the water in the American River 730 feet below.

A Placer County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said that a person apparently jumped and a witness watched it occur, reporting it to authorities.

More people saw the body floating downstream in the American River confluence area, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The death would mean the toll from leaps or falls from the nation’s fourth highest bridge will have reached 80 since it was opened to the public in 1973. The bridge is California’s highest.

Help is available for people having suicidal thoughts by calling the Placer County 24-hour hotline at 530-886-5401 or 888-886-5401 in Auburn.
