Close Call in the Canyon

Firefighters called to report of truck, wildland fire in tinder dry canyon

Firefighters were called to a possible grassland fire dangerously close to Auburn today and were able to check any fire spread from a truck that had pulled to the side of Highway 49 in the American river canyon.

The initial report to authorities described a vehicle fire that had spread into grass in steep wildland off the highway near the American River confluence. The report was received shortly after 4 p.m. at the height of the heat of the day call came in just after 4 p.m. when temperatures were in the low 90s.

Firefighters were able to keep any fire from spreading and were observed looking at the rear undercarriage of the truck as it sat at the side of the road. Both lanes were open to traffic.
