LOOMIS – Del Oro High football coach Jeff Walters will get an early measuring stick of his Golden Eagles’ grid squad Friday when the Black and Gold trek to Sacramento to take on Christian Brothers in a scrimmage that will begin at 10 a.m.

Del Oro, 8-6 a year ago in Walters’ first season, will be using the scrum to start preparations for the zero week season-opener Aug. 17, when the Golden Eagles kick off their 2018 campaign playing at Amador Valley in Pleasanton.

“We’re pretty healthy right now,” said Walters about his team avoiding any major bumps and bruises in their early full-pad workouts. “We’re ready to go.”

In Christian Brothers, the Golden Eagles will be running into a squad that finished at 10-3 last season and fell to eventual Division III Sac-Joaquin Section champion Manteca, 43-38, in the semifinal round.

While the Falcons lost several standouts to graduation, including versatile tight end Spencer Webb to Oregon, CBS returns one of the Sacramento area’s top two-way players in senior receiver-defensive back Tyler Green.

Del Oro will unveil a new offensive look as Walters plans to use multiple looks this season. Meanwhile, on defense, the Golden Eagles will have a new defensive coordinator this season as Josh Parry, who ironically had some postseason battles with the Golden Eagles when he played at Sonora High in the 1990s, will be calling the shots. Parry also played at San Jose State and later with the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks. He played in the 2005 Super Bowl with the Eagles.

Del Oro’s JV and frosh squads will also be scrimmaging Friday at Christian Brothers.

The Golden Eagles will also hold their annual Kickoff Rally in downtown Loomis at 6 p.m. Saturday evening. The event features Del Oro’s three football teams, cheerleaders, band and the Del Oro Jr. Golden Eagle teams as well.
