Madison Hanser may be only 9 years old, but she feels right at home behind the wheel. She also loves smoking her competition, as they watch the skull-and-crossbones with pigtails on her car speed by them. The drag racer from Cool cruised to first place in the Junior Draft Drag Racing League, held at Sacramento Speedway. Madison finished with the highest points total in the league this season, which started in April. “I was really happy,” Madison said. “I was in third place and I worked up. I really tried my best.” With speeds reaching 50 mph, Madison said she has to stay focused and drive straight to come out on top. Her best time is 12.9 seconds on a 1/8 of a mile track. Confident in her ability to put the pedal to the metal, she also relishes in beating the boys in her blue-and-purple flamed ride. “They always think they can win,” Hanser said. “But I win. Last year I was racing this boy and he went all the way under the track and he blew his motor up.” To celebrate Madison’s victory, her father John Hanser decided to get her a trade-in. Her new car, a 1290, will replace her 890, and reach speeds of 80 mph. Hanser said that while he was never worried about Madison before, he will be a little nervous when she drives the faster car. To start out with, drag cars run about $3,000, according to Hanser. Madison’s new car cost about $7,000. “I watched a movie on drag racing and I thought Madison should try it,” Hanser said. “I used to fix up hot rods, but the economy just got so bad.” With a championship title under her belt, Madison is getting some big aspirations. Hanser said he hopes they can get some sponsors for her so that she can continue the sport at the Funny Car and Pro Stock levels. “It’s fun and it’s a great experience to learn how to drive,” Madison said. “I want to be like Erica Enders. She used to be a little drag racer like me and now she races in the Pro Stock Division.” Reach Sara Seyydin at For the latest in Journal Sports follow us on twitter @PlacerSports.
