Del Oro to co-host Sierra Shootout/McCollum Invitational

If you are a water polo aficionado, South Placer County will be the place to be this weekend as Del Oro and Woodcreek play host to the 14th annual Sierra Shootout/Chuck McCollum Invitational.

A total of 64 boys teams from all over Northern California will invade the local area for the two-day tournament that begins Friday and will continue through Saturday afternoon’s championship match .

Swimming pool sites that will be used include Del Oro, Rocklin High, Whitney High and Sierra College. The tournament directors are Jake Hastie of Del Oro and Bruce Hastie of Woodcreek.

The Sierra Shootout is the first of two big back-to-back area tournaments. Next weekend, Sept. 14–15, the area girls teams will take over the spotlight.

Championship Division teams for this weekend include Northgate of Walnut Creek, Bella Vista, Marin Academy, El Capitan of Merced, Ponderosa, Tamalpais of Mill Valley, Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland and Gregori of Modesto.

Seeding, which is done by a team’s previous year’s finish, has Del Oro and Woodcreek in the Platinum Division with Buhach Colony of Atwater, Nevada Union, Sonora, Alameda, Atwater and Christian Brothers.

Roseville is in the AA Championship Division while Whitney will vie in the Gold Bracket. Other area teams include Oakmont playing in the Silver Bracket and JV teams from Woodcreek and Rocklin vying in the Classic BB Division.

Admission is $5 daily.
