LOOMIS–  If there was any question about the Del Oro football team being ready for the start of Sierra Foothill League play, the Golden Eagles may have answered it here Friday night.

Playing a dangerous Sacramento High team that Eagles coach Jeff Walters noted before the game was “way better than their record shows”, the Golden Eagles rose up and excelled on both sides of the ball in subduing the Dragons, 45-18.

The win, Del Oro’s fourth straight to start the season, let the Golden Eagles put their best foot forward as they gear up for Friday’s huge SFL opener at Granite Bay.

“Yes, I thought the kids played the type of game we need at this point of the season,” said Walters. “Sacramento High is probably the best 0-4 team in the section. Very athletic and explosive. Our guys didn’t bat an eye. They showed a lot of resolve tonight.”

For Del Oro, after trading an early touchdown with the Dragons, the Golden Eagles scored 17 unanswered points to build a 23-6 advantage at halftime, and then after the visitors pulled to within 23-12 in the third stanza, DO reeled off 17 more points to put the contest on ice.

The Golden Eagles relied more on their ground game Friday as Sheldon Conde piled up rushing touchdowns of 10, 1 and 20 yards. He was joined in the touchdown department by Jaden Gravatt, who added a 4-yard six-pointer just before halftime.

In the second half, Ryan Whalley booted a 28-yard field goal and Carson Westlake made the Dragons pay with a 30-yard interception return for another score. Also on defense, Johnny Guzman stood out with two pass picks of his own.

Del Oro’s scoring was rounded out in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Carson Jarratt to Charlie Rogers.

For Del Oro, the Golden Eagles will enter Friday’s game with Granite Bay facing a rejuvenated Grizzlies team which has rebounded from two opening losses to win over Jesuit and Vacaville. On Friday, the Grizzlies blasted Vacaville, 31-0.

In the JV game, Del Oro improved to 4-0 on the season with a 44-0 romp over the Dragons. In frosh action on Thursday, Del Oro claimed a 14-7 win over Turlock.
