Hillmen alumni had a big week from coast to coast. Here’s what some of the locally grown talent did recently:
Mason and the Miracle
The Fort Myers Miracle, a minor league baseball team that includes former Placer High pitcher Ryan Mason, won the Single-A Florida State League championship Tuesday against the Daytona Tortugas in a best-of-five series. Mason, who was taken in the 13th round of the 2016 MLB amateur draft by the Minnesota Twins, was 10-3 with a 2.77 ERA and seven saves in 39 relief appearances between the Midwest and Florida State League in 2018.
Vanessa Alonzo, formerly of Placer High, scored her first goal of the 2018 season for Sierra College in a 13-0 blowout Sept. 4 against Shasta. Alonzo scored four goals as a freshman last season.
Another Placer alum, Conner Entz, of William Jessup men’s soccer netted the Warriors’ lone goal in a 2-1 loss to UC Merced, a team on the bubble of the Top 25 in the NAIA coaches poll. It was Entz’s first goal of the season.
Not so Sluggish
Elana Muzzy of the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, finished 15th overall at the Argo Invitational at Notre Dame de Namur University. The freshman from Placer was second amongst her teammates with a time of 25:03.7 in the women’s race.
