1 killed in officer-involved shootingBy: Rachel Zirin, Senior Reporter
A Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy was killed and another injured after an exchange of gunfire outside a Rancho Cordova store at 1:44 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17.
Deputy Mark Stasyuk, 27, succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at an area hospital. The four-and-a-half-year veteran of the department was shot by the suspect in the upper body, said Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones.
Julie Robertson, 28, was shot in the arm, and is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery. She is a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the department.
An uninvolved citizen was also shot, presumably by the suspect. That citizen was reported to be in stable condition at this time.
The suspect in this incident was identified as Anton Lemon Moore.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a disturbance at Pep Boys on the 10000 block of Folsom Boulevard. The initial call for service gave no indication the suspect was armed or dangerous. Upon the officers’ arrival, they were fired upon by Moore and were able to return fire.
“We had two officers show up to a store. When they arrived, they were immediately fired upon,” Jones said.
After an exchange of gunfire, the Moore fled on foot and was engaged by two other officers; and still was not complying with the officers’ directive, Jones said.
“Those two officers fired at the suspect as well. The suspect is in custody,” he said.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Shaun Hampton said they believe they have everyone in custody who was involved in the incident.
“For the second time in a little over a year, and the third time since I have been sheriff, I have the unfortunate duty to inform you all that we’ve had yet another officer killed in the line of duty in Sacramento County,” Jones said during a press briefing. “It’s incredibly difficult for all of us, myself included. It’s an incredible hole that never quite gets filled in the hearts of our department, but it’s also the community that suffered. The City of Rancho Cordova and the entire county has suffered a loss as well.”
Stasyuk leaves behind a wife, mother, father, and sister. He was preceded in death by his older brother.
The investigation into the incident will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, which is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the Sheriff’s Department’s jurisdiction. An independent review of the officer-involved shooting will be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. In accordance with the Sheriff’s Department’s policies and procedures, the deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
