Alleged canal jumper not found

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office did not find a body after receiving a call Tuesday evening regarding a man jumping into Auburn’s Wise Canal. The call came in at 5:05 p.m., and the reporting party was calling from a cell phone, according to Lt. Jeff Ausnow, spokesman for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. The caller said a man had jumped into the canal after saying that his friend had died there previously and he was going to die there too, Ausnow said. The caller said he didn’t know exactly where he was, but he mentioned he was in the place where possible homicides had occurred before. “The man who called in said he was from out of the area,” Ausnow said Wednesday. The Sheriff’s Office responded with seven units and a helicopter, but was unable to find the person who called or a body in the canal, according to Ausnow. “They combed the area, flew the air, checked all the places … nobody was ever seen or found,” he said. “It was unsure whether it was a true report or not. We took it seriously at the time, expended a lot of resources and time. To date we have yet to confirm anyone jumped in, and we have not located a body.” No further information about the incident is available at this time. ~Bridget Jones
