Amgen Tour of California riders will take a lap or two through Old Town and Downtown Auburn before setting off for Folsom and, ultimately, Modesto, for Stage 3 of the 2011 race May 17. Officials released route details Wednesday morning online and the city of Auburn has a celebration event scheduled for later today at 4:30 p.m. where they plan to hand out maps of the route at Central Square in Downtown Auburn. Tour of California competitors are expected to start in the Central Square area and then take a warm-up lap around Old Town and Downtown Auburn, including a pass by the historic courthouse, before returning to the start line. After another lap, riders will set off on Auburn Folsom Road toward Folsom. Stage 3 is designed to be a fast and flat course for sprinters, according to Amgen officials. The 120-mile leg of the race will end in Modesto that day. Information about the first and second stages of the race were also released. Stage 1 takes place in Lake Tahoe. Stage 2 begins at Squaw Valley USA resort and ends in Sacramento. During the second stage, riders will travel through Truckee, endure a King of The Mountain climb at Donner Lake, and ride into Nevada City, which was a stage start city last year. That stage of the race will also go thorough Grass Valley before heading to Beale Air Force Base and eventually Downtown Sacramento. ~ Staff report ---------- Amgen Tour of California route announcement What: Find out what streets cyclists will ride in Auburn Where: Central Square, Downtown Auburn When: 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday More: Barbecue and music For information: E-mail or call the local California Visitors center at (530) 887-2111. ----------
