Area roundup: Placer freshmen roll past Bear River, 56-24

The Placer freshmen boys basketball team, lead by Jack Kearns (11 points) and Taylor Levesque (11), improved to 14-4, 2-1 in the Pioneer Valley League Thursday with a convincing 56-24 victory over Bear River.
Placer jumped out to a 17-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Bear River tried to keep it close, going into halftime trailing 27-16. But Placer began the third quarter with a 19-0 run and forced 13 turnovers while holding Bear River scoreless in the quarter. Placer had eight others in the scoring column, including Austen Lipsmeyer (6), Simeon Engle (6), Marcus Ante (6), Riley Junger (4), Josh Matthews (4), Gavin Ware (3), Drew Tomashefsky (3) and Conor Collins (2). 
Bear River JV 59, Placer 45 — The Hillmen’s Derek Haney had 14 points and Parker Houston played well defensively, coming up with thre steals in three second half of his team’s defeat. With the loss, Placer fell to 9-8, 1-2. Bear River’s Ben Olena scored 22 points and Brandon Murphy added 11. The Bruins are now 2-1 in PVL play.
