The Placer High School boys cross country team scored another victory on Saturday at the 50th annual, 14-school Nevada Union Invite at Nevada Union High.
Toby Qualls had a first-place overall finish with a time of 16 minutes, six seconds, good for the eight-best clocking in the 50-year history of the three-mile event.
Qualls was followed by Gama Gomez (fourth overall, 16:55), Viktor Dorofeyev (ninth, 17:13), Josh Mason (10th, 17:23) and Moshe McCarter (11th, 17:25).
The top seven Hillmen boys all finished in the top 19 even with Zach Stelzer injured. Stelzer is a No. 2/3 runner for the Hillmen, who injured his Iliotibial band at the Del Oro Invite. He should be back by Oct. 1, coach Randall Fee said.
The varsity girls finished fifth at the Nevada Union Invite.
They were led by Halle Ralls (22:17), Ruth Braica (22:36), Macaylea Mitchell (22:52), Kyra Hostetler (23:13) and Marci Baker (23:48).
The Hillmen next compete Wednesday at the Pioneer Valley League Meet No. 1 at Gibson Ranch. The meet starts at 3:30 p.m.
Placer JV 45, Casa Roble 37 — The Hillmen fumbled the ball away trying to run out the clock with 58 seconds to go, but their defense came up with a big stand to preserve the victory Friday.
