Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Roseville, is hobbling around on crutches this week and wearing a big knee brace. Gaines was in a skiing accident Friday afternoon at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort while racing in a giant slalom competition with the Auburn Rotary Club ski team. “It looks like I tore my ACL and MCL and also have a small fracture,” Gaines cheerfully reported Wednesday. “I have been skiing for 45 years and have never had a major injury.” Like Gaines, Auburn City Councilwoman Bridget Powers crashed and burned on the Alpine Meadows ski racecourse during her second run with the Rotary Club team Friday. Powers had a bruised nose and a bump on her forehead but was otherwise in great spirits this week. She is expected to fully recover with no lingering problems Gaines’ long-term prognosis is still up in the air. “I will get another report (from the doctor) next week,” Gaines said. “Hopefully, it will heal on its own and I can avoid surgery. It was a great day up until then.” When constituents and colleagues see the Republican Assemblyman and ask how he was injured, Gaines is not quick to mention skiing. “My joke is that I went in to see Gov. Schwarzenegger about a tax cut and this is how I came out,” Gaines said. — Deric Rothe
