The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team announced last week that 13 riders from last season will return to race with the team next year, bringing the total number of riders for the Blue Train’s 2013 campaign to 21 athletes.
Auburn’s Chris Jones is among them.
The returning members include a veritable who’s who of standout riders with the ability to consistently deliver podium-placing results. Jake Keough (USA), Hilton Clarke (AUS), Robert Förster, Marc de Maar (CUR), and Jeff Louder (USA) were often seen taking their turn on one of the top three steps or winning special classification jersey honors on the post-race podium throughout 2012.
The eight men who helped deliver their highly decorated teammates' success round out the list of returning riders and include Ben Day (AUS), Jonny Clarke (AUS), Brad White (USA), Jones (USA), Philip Deignan (IRE), Karl Menzies (AUS), Davide Frattini (ITA) and Adrian Hegyvary (USA).
After announcing the new additions to the 2013 roster, General Manager and Team Director, Mike Tamayo, offered his perspective on each of his returning charges, stating, “We are very happy to have 13 outstanding riders return to the team for this upcoming season. These guys have proven through the years how valuable they are and combined with the eight new guys joining us, we are confident these 21 individuals will quickly come together to race most effectively as one unit.
“We are looking forward to a great season ahead and having a solid group of strong professionals and high character guys like the ones who are returning along with our newest additions. I believe the sky is the limit for where we can go in 2013.”
Tamayo had high praise for Jones.
“If there is a rider that always seems to be there it is Chris Jones. Chris is as tough as they come,” Tamayo said. “He is dependable, dynamic and selfless. Whether it is in the mountains, the narrow roads in Italy, or the cobbles in Belgium, Chris delivers for this team.”
