Auburn all-stars’ run ends in Rio Linda

The Auburn Little League softball major division all-stars battled for three wins in the elimination bracket, before getting knocked out of the Division 2 Tournament Saturday night in Rio Linda. Auburn fell to Peach Bowl (Yuba City) 5-1 Saturday after a 2-1 win over Chico earlier in the day. Auburn’s Natalie Rowland pitched three shutout innings and was 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss to Peach Bowl. Emily Geil was 3-for-3 with one RBI and catcher Sarah Kosmata threw a runner out at third base, with Delana Provan taking the throw. In the victory over Chico, Peyton McCortney pitched six innings and struck out three. Geil was outstanding at shortstop with four putouts while second baseman Emma Welch and first baseman Brittany Welch were also strong. Brittany was 2-for-3 with a double. Geil was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Provan was 1-for-1 with an RBI. On Friday, Auburn defeated Cottonwood 11-5. Auburn rallied from a 5-3 deficit with eight runs in the fourth inning. Bethany Thornton and McCortney combined for the win in the pitcher’s circle. Thornton struck out 10 in 4 1/3 innings. Provan knocked in five runs with a 2-for-4 performance. Geil was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Rowland was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.Kosmata was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. — Todd Mordhorst
