Auburn’s Benny May won the 2013 Elks “Hoop Shoot” West Region Championship for 10- and 11-year-old boys last weekend in Las Vegas.

May, representing Lodge No. 1691, made 19 of 25 shots. He advances to the national finals, which will be held in Springfield, Mass., in April.

After May was victorious in his age division at Placer High School in October, he traveled up to Portola, where he placed first and was entered into the state competition.  The state competition took place in Sacramento on Jan. 26, where May earned the title of Northern California and Hawaii champ.

When Southern California scores were tallied up, May had the highest score in the state in the boy's 10-11 year old division and was named the California State Champion.

In Las Vegas, May represented California and Hawaii and competed against the state champions from Arizona, Utah and Nevada.

Last year, May finished as runner-up in the regional round.

The Elks “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Contest says it’s the largest coeducational youth sports program in the nation.

The Elks “Hoop Shoot” Contest is funded entirely by the Elks National Foundation, the primary charitable arm of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA.
