The inaugural Northern California Jam-Off and nod to Jerry Garcia, who on Aug. 1 would have turned 70, will be held Saturday, July 28, at the Auburn Event Center, 145 Harrison Ave., Auburn.
This special show will feature the The Coalition and Achilles Wheel. The Coalition (www.coalitionband.com) features Rick Zamora (Curtis Mayfield Band), Sean Lehe (Poor Mans Whiskey, Isabella) and Sean Barfly (Mind-X, JGB+). The band pulls from all areas of the musical spectrum, from bluegrass to jazz, and brings to the table a fun mix of originals and covers that will keep the dance floor packed
Achilles Wheel (www.achilleswheel.com) is fronted by Paul Kamm (Buck Love & The Humperheads, The Deadbeats, Paul & Eleanor) and Jonny “Mojo”" Flores (Sacramento Blues Revue, Dead Ahead, Rusty Buckets). These two combine with a rhythm section that features dual drummers. Drawing from the roots of the Grateful Dead and other Americana-jam-swamp-bluegrass-blues-funk bands, Achilles Wheel has developed an incredible following, recently featured at festivals including the Kate Wolf Festival, Hangtown and others. Their sound is both familiar and at the same time new, with sweet harmonies and rhythms that beg to be danced to.
Both bands will feature two sets, and likely there will be some cross-pollination going on. The show is offered for $10. This is an all-ages event, but ID is required for the bar and no outside food or drink is allowed. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale Cherry Records and Tribal Weaver, Dimple Records and www.coalwheel.eventbrite.com.
