Auburn Gymnastics Center’s level 4 and 5 teams opened the season Sunday hitting their routines and getting fired up for what is sure to be a big season for the local gymnasts. Eleven competitors made the trip to Rancho Cordova on Sunday taking with them their leotards, grips and nerves. “Our first meet of the season is always about getting through the nerves,” said Natalie Otis of Auburn Gymnastics. “That is part of what is so great about this sport because they work through it and in the end they realize that all we are expecting is for them to get focused and give 100 percent.” For many of the girls, Sunday was their first official meet as a competitive gymnast. The team trains six to nine hours a week in the off season working on the skills for competitive year that lasts from August to December. The team competes in one to two meets each month leading up to the State Championships. “We had a good start on Sunday; however, we definitely see where we can improve. We have a great team of hard-working girls that we are excited about,” Otis said. “We also got a chance to see which events are going to be stand out events for the girls as well.” From the level 4 team Finn Thomas took second on bars with a 8.7, Kara Christensen took seventh on beam with a 7.9, Emily Benson took sixth on beam with a 8.1, Elene Closson took tenth on beam with a 7.875, Hannah Fulton took ninth on vault with a 8.775, Delilah Fulton took seventh on bars and beam with a 8.1, Hannah Caminiti took tenth on vault with a 8.8, Mary Riggins’ best event was vault where she earned a 8.6 and Kristen Kopp proved to be a all-around contender by earning third place overall. Level 5 gymnasts Allyson Osborn and Madison Candler began their season on Sunday with Osborn performing best on bars and vault while Candler looked her best on floor. The season will continue the weekend of Sept. 18. Auburn Gymnastics Center is celebrating National Gymnastics Day on Sept. 18 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 11480 C Avenue.
