The Auburn Gymnastics Center girls’ optional season got underway in Rancho Cordova at Technique Gymnastics at the 2013 Golden State Classic last weekend with strong starts from the girls’ level 7 and X-Cel Gold teams.
Head coach Jennifer Christenson believes the girls have the skills necessary to once again be one of the area's best contenders for state event titles.
“The teams brought home four first-place event medals and won first place as a team at their first showing of the year – I would say we are off to a great start,” Christenson said. "They have the skills and talent to do well this season, but we have to work on being consistent at practice.”
Madison Candler was the first to compete over the weekend. Candler is a level 7 and won the bars with an 8.85 and floor with a 9.225. She placed third on vault with a 9.425 and fifth on beam with an 8.5. She was third in the all-around.
Allyson Osborn, Emily Esteban, Aneesa Perez, Kara Christensen and Emily Benson competed together as X-Cel Gold and won first-place team, beating out four other gymnastics facilities. Individual first place awards went to Osborn on bars with a 9.125 and Esteban with a 9.4 on beam.
Christenson placed in the top five on the bars with an 8.85 and on floor with an 8.875, Peres won third on floor with a 9.0, Esteban placed fifth in the all-around and Osborn placed second on vault with a 9.175 and fourth on floor with an 8.9 and 4th in the all-around.
The teams will be traveling to San Diego on Sunday, expecting to defend their first-place win.
