The Auburn Little League Junior All-Star Softball squad fought off elimination Sunday with a pair of victories in the Division II Tournament in West Sacramento. Pitcher Lizzy Rutherford tossed 10 innings and allowed just two runs as Auburn posted wins over Peach Bowl and Chester, respectively. Catcher Kasey Miller was outstanding as she caught all 14 innings of action. Claire Hansen had a big weekend at the plate, batting .900 in Auburn’s three games. Lori Schmitz batted .636. Becky Matthews, Makenna Gaffney and Hansen each added home runs and were solid defensively. Katie Urban pitched four strong innings and will start tonight’s game at 6 p.m. in West Sacramento. Senior Division Auburn fell to Tahoe-Tallac 5-2 early Sunday before rebounding with a 9-6 win over San Jose in Rio Linda. Nicole Nevares pitched four excellent innings to pick up the win against San Jose while Kailey Gaffney tossed three solid innings of relief. Kacy Romero was the star at the plate Sunday, going 4-for-7 with a triple and three RBIs. Abby Kendall was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI while Taylor Graham finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Auburn will play an elimination game tonight at 6:30 in Rio Linda. Major Division The Auburn All-Stars ran into some tough luck against the host Martinez team as they fell 6-0 on Sunday. Amanda Geil was outstanding in the pitcher’s circle with nine strikeouts in six innings. But the Auburn bats couldn’t get anything going against Martinez. Defensively, Elena Topete led the way, combining with Sarah Hansen to tag out a Martinez baserunner in a pickle to end the final inning. Auburn will face West Sacramento today at 6 p.m. in an elimination game. Minor Division Auburn came up just short in a thrilling pitcher’s duel in Concord. Bethany Thornton gave up just one hit in seven innings and Pinole-Hercules came up with the decisive run in the eighth to win 1-0. Delena Porvan had a tremendous defensive effort at third base while Annabelle Johnson was outstanding in the outfield. Auburn will play an elimination game tonight at 6 p.m. in Concord.
