Auburn Library spotlights local volunteers

Nonprofit groups showcased through February
Local volunteer organizations are receiving a helping hand from Friends of the Auburn Library this month. In an effort to highlight their efforts for the community and to recruit volunteers, Auburn Library will display exhibits of three local volunteer organizations through February. The organizations provide a variety of fields in which individuals have an opportunity to assist. These groups are Canyon Keepers, Sight Word Busters and Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital Guild. Canyon Keepers provides assistance to State Parks in the Auburn State Recreation Area. They have several services including Jr. Rangers, docent services in the recreation area, educational programs, guided hikes, as well as general assistance to the park ranger staff and State Parks personnel. Community relations contact for the group Jim Ferris explained more about the organization. “We provide a wide range of services.” Ferris said, “Our park rangers are scattered over a large area so our members help visitors find their way around. Volunteers take visitors on interpretive hikes covering the history and geology of the area, as well as assist in trail maintenance.” Ferris added that volunteers of all age groups are welcome. Sight Word Busters works to assist beginning readers in mastering the early stages of reading skills. Their volunteers can be found daily in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade classrooms at Rock Creek Elementary, tutoring students in beginning reading skills. Their web page describes the mission of the group as providing a backup to the staff to help children in comprehension, fluency and to help them master high frequency words. The Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital Guild assists the hospital with patients and non-patients alike. Volunteers of this group act as greeters for the hospital, provide tours of the facility, run the guild’s gift shop, and provide assistance to incoming patients. Funds raised go toward financial assistance for patient related equipment, scholarships for medical students, as well as annual monetary gifts toward the hospital. They especially rely on volunteers ages 14 to 17. Those who would like more information about these groups or would like to volunteer are encouraged to call.
