Auburn Post 84 bounces back with doubleheader sweep
After a tough 11-8 loss to Manhart, the Auburn Post 84 American Legion baseball team bounced back last Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of Hard 90 Baseball at James Field in Auburn.
In the Saturday loss to Manhart, Post 84's pitching was roughed up a bit but the team's bats still came up with a steady offense. Alex Mason (Del Oro High School) had the biggest game as he went 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run and five runs batted in.
Also supplying punch were Michael Moore (Colfax High), who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs; A.J. Newby (Del Oro High), who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Trevor McGhee (Bear River High), who was 2-for-3 with a double.
In Sunday's first game with Hard 90, Mason was the winning hurler as he handcuffed the Hard 90 bats on just four hits while striking out eight. At the plate, Newby was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs while James Harris (Bear River High) and Jake Jarman (Bear River High) were both 2-for-2.
Shane Soria (Forest Lake Christian) went 2-for-3 at the plate, Adam Tricomo (Colfax High) was 2-for-2 and Nick Viola (Jesuit High) had a double.
In the nightcap, Viola teamed with A.J. Sanchez (Placer) on taming Hard 90 on just five hits as Post 84 captured a 12-2 win. Both Viola and Dave Campbell (Colfax) went 2-for-2 while Jarman and McGhee both added doubles.
Post 84 also went 3-3 in the recent Reno Muckdogs July 4th Classic. Two of Auburn's wins came over Trosky Valley of San Jose and the San Carlos Seals, a pair of tough Bay Area powers.
"It was a good experience for our kids," said Post 84 assistant coach Tim Day. "We found out that we just can't go out and throw our gloves on the field and it's going to happen."
Post 84, now 15-5 overall, will play in the District Tournament beginning Thursday at Antelope High School.
Game time is 5:30 p.m. in the best of three series with Antelope.
Post 84 will then host the Legion Area Tournament at James Field July 18-22.
