Auburn shows false security

I am so pleased that the Journal put the purse thief story on the front page (Jan. 4). I have seen so many women in our area leaving their purses unattended in shopping carts. Every time I see that occur, I walk over to the woman and warn her of the danger of leaving her purse unattended. I think people who live here have a false sense of security — that because this is such a wonderful, friendly place, that bad things could not possibly happen here — wrong! I moved here from a very crime-ridden city (New Orleans) and because of that, I am always aware of my surroundings, as well as keeping my purse on my shoulder at all times. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to grab a purse from a shopping cart. Then he or she is gone and so is your money, credit cards, drivers license, etc. Pay attention to your belongings as well as your surroundings. It could save you a great deal of heartache.
