LAKE OF THE PINES - The Bear River High football team proved again why its defense is statistically near the top of the Sac-Joaquin Section Friday night. The Bruins held River Valley scoreless in a 41-0 romp on homecoming night. The Bruin secondary picked off four passes from Falcon quarterback Gregory Cannon and the front line added three sacks to put Bear River at 5-0 at the half way point of the season. The Bruins are allowing just 7.2 points per game. “The secondary, linebackers and front line are playing great,” said Co-Head Coach Terry Logue. “We have depth and we are playing together.” Three stops came inside the red zone during the second period and one ended on a fourth and long when Trevor McGhee intercepted the ball at the one yard line. “I tried to convince the referee that I dropped it, but he didn’t buy it,” said McGhee. The offense was on point as five different Bruins scored. The first two possessions ended with touchdown passes from three-year starter James Harris. Senior wide receiver Harley Sauers caught one from 15 yards out while on the next drive Brandon Wooner flared to the trim for an 18-yard toss and score. Running back Devaughn Lofton added another touchdown late in the first period on a 25 yard sweep to push the lead to three touchdowns. Senior Josh Toft scored in the middle of the second period on a 14-yard dash. Two runs in the third period would come from Cody Heard and Austin Dowling. Kicker Jack Tortorici was named homecoming king and the varsity water girl, Brianna Gatto, was crowned queen during halftime. The loss sends River Valley to 2-3 heading into their bye week. Bear River will face Placer at home for a Pioneer Valley League matchup on October 7th. Junior varsity For the first time in three years the Junior Varsity Bruins were handed a loss in a 28-21 defeat. A fourth quarter fake punt by the Falcons wound up going for 68 yards and the score. The winning streak ends at 25 consecutive games.
