Bear River breezes past Whitney

The Bear River High volleyball team swept past Whitney on the road Thursday, improving to 4-1 on the season. Junior Katie Tomkievicz and sophomore Sara Schell drilled nine kills each and Schell tossed in seven aces as the Bruins cruised to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 win over their former Pioneer Valley League foes. Ponderosa 3, Placer 1 — The Hillgals could not keep up with the Bruins, who used their height to dominate at the net in a 25-23, 25-27, 25-12, 25-13 win. Junior Michaela Leonard had a big match for Placer with 17 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Erin Ellner and Gabby Ortez tossed in six kills apiece. Orteza added 13 digs and 20 assists. Kirsten Schauble had 13 assists for Placer (2-1). Placer’s freshmen and junior varsity teams both beat Ponderosa in two. Del Oro 3, Colfax 1 at Colfax — The Golden Eagles came out flat in the first game of the match, but came back to win the next three, defeating Colfax in four games, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-13. Belle Obert led the way once again with 19 kills and 13 digs. Tatum Jungsten and Aly Duffin both finished with 12 kills. Jungsten’s last kill ended the match. Sophomore Morgan Leese also had a good offensive game for the Golden Eagles witth seven kills and four aces. Bailey Humes had 45 assists, four aces and six dig. Libero Vicky Warner had nine digs for Del Oro (10-1). Colfax got 15 kills, two blocks and 10 digs from Iona Lofrano. Erica Heikila added 11 kills, two blocks, 16 digs and 13 points scored on her serve. Kelsey Whittet tossed in seven kills and three blocks and Ashley Scott added 23 digs. Hailey Biles dished out 38 assists for the Falcons (2-2). Colfax’s junior varsity team beat Del Oro in three games and the Del Oro freshmen won 25-21, 25-13.
