Bear River bruises Foothill, 48-34
SACRAMENTO - “Play-off tickets are being handed out” is what Bear River High coach Terry Logue told his team leading up to Friday night’s game.
The cost? A win against Foothill. The Bruins have their passes in hand after beating the Mustangs 49-34.
Those tickets did not come as easy as the score suggests.
“We could have had 70 points, but you just didn’t feel comfortable until it was over,” Logue said after his team improved to 7-2 and 2-2 in the Pioneer Valley League.
Quarterback James Harris was on his way to his best game as a Bruin, finding wide receiver Harley Sauers in stride for a beautiful 32-yard touchdown and then two more scores to tight end Brandon Wooner before being knocked out of the game with a concussion. Harris finished 4 for 4 with 133 yards in two quarters of play.
Junior fullback Andrew Reiss who came into the game with just 84 yards all season was a big reason the Bruins got down field with ease. His 18 punishing runs for 104 yards were a reason the 2-7 Mustangs were left with bruises.
“My line blocked their butts off, they were amazing,” said Reiss.
Foothill, which trailed 28-7 in the second period, did not let up, and cut the Bruin lead 28-21 heading into the locker room at halftime. Quarterback David Sanders led the late half charge and finished the game with 161 yards, two passing touchdowns and he added 99 yards and another score rushing.
Back to back touchdown runs put the game out of reach midway through the third as Bear River went up 41-21. Devaughn Lofton was untouched on a 17-yard carry before diving into the pylon. Josh Toft slipped in for his second score of the night on a nine-yard play and finished with 105 yards for the evening.
The Bruins may have their bags packed for the trip to the postseason, but Wooner enjoyed the Foothill win for another reason.
“Now we have momentum and if we can beat Colfax we will have a home playoff game," he said.
Kickoff for the showdown with the Falcons is at 7:30 p.m. next Friday in Lake of the Pines.
