The Bear River High volleyball team bowed out of the CIF NorCal playoffs Tuesday night, but not before giving Marin Catholic a serious scare. The sixth-seeded Bruins lost 25-15, 23-25, 25-27, 25-13, 15-13 in Kentfield. Bear River ended the year with a 27-11 record. “Both teams played outstanding defense,” Bear River coach Matt McDonald said. “The limited our hitters and we were able to limit their hitters. It was a good match, back and forth. If a couple of breaks go our way in that fifth game we could have won it.” Junior Sara Schell dropped 15 kills to lead the Bruins. Senior Katie Tomkiewicz added nine and sophomore Kirsten Pereira had six kills. Junior Kaya Johnson passed out 29 assists. Bear River will welcome back 11 of 15 players from this year’s team for the 2012 season. “I just can’t thank the four seniors enough for everything they’ve done to put us on the map,” McDonald said. “We’re excited about where we’re headed. We’re pumped to try and defend our (Pioneer Valley League) championshp and get even further next year.”
