While there is a battle going on between the Colfax Lady Falcons and Bear River Bruins girls basketball teams for leadership in the Pioneer Valley League basketball race, there’s also a struggle between the two teams for who will be the top team in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section’s Div. IV basketball seeding chase.

In the first release of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section’s basketball Power Ratings Tuesday, Bear River holds down the girls Div. IV No. 1 position with Colfax nipping at the Bruins’ heels in the No. 2 position.

Bear River, the first girls team in the section to reach the 20-win plateau, is 20-2 overall and 5-1 in PVL games. The Bruins are tied with Colfax (15-8, 5-1) for the PVL lead with something having to give when the two squads meet this Thursday night at Lake of the Pines. Colfax won the first meeting between the two teams, 50-41, back on Jan. 16 in Colfax.

In other girls Power Ratings involving foothill area schools in games played through Friday, in Div. II, Del Oro is currently ranked No. 4 behind Sacramento, McNair of Stockton and Gregori of Modesto.

In Div. III, Placer’s Hillmen hold down the No. 8 position. Christian Brothers tops the Div. III poll followed by Rio Americano, Vanden, Modesto Christian, Patterson, Manteca, River Valley and the Hillmen.

Foresthill, meanwhile, is No. 9 in girls Div. V while Forest Lake Christian sits at No. 11.

In the boys rankings, Del Oro, despite being 14-8 overall, will need to finish the season in a flurry to reach the post season. In this week’s ratings, the Golden Eagles are in the No. 23 position, mostly because of their 2-3 Sierra Foothill League slate. The squad, however, is just one win away from the CIF’s 15-win level that is needed to become playoff eligible.

In the boys Div. III ratings, Placer, 17-5 overall, is rated No. 6 this week. In a close battle with PVL foes, Lincoln is No. 7 and Foothill No. 8. Sierra, Casa Roble, Modesto Christian and Weston Ranch are the top four schools in Div. III.

Two area squads are currently in the top sixteen of the boys Div. IV ratings. Colfax, 17-5, is No. 4 behind Summerville, Liberty Ranch and Riverbank. Meanwhile, Bear River is at No. 15 but still needs one more league win to reach the league’s qualifying level of two league wins.

In boys Div. V, Forest Lake Christian sits at No. 10 and Foresthill is No. 22.

The second power ratings will be released next Monday, Feb. 4.
