Bear River, Colfax hit the road, pull playoff upsets

The Bear River High volleyball team defied its No. 13 Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoff seeding Tuesday night. The Bruins took out fourth-seeded West Campus 25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 25-15 in Sacramento.
Junior Katie Tomkievicz played well with nine kills and six aces. Sophomore Sara Schell attacked for 19 kills and freshman Kirsten Pereira served up six aces in the win. Sophomore setter Kaya Johnson handed out 34 assists as the Bruins improved to 28-13 on the season.
No. 13 Bear River will take on No. 5 Capital Christian on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Colfax 3, Central Catholic 2 at Modesto — The Falcons topped the Raiders in a five-game Diviision IV thriller 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 17-25, 15-11.
Senior Haley Biles dished out 39 assists and added three blocks while junior Maggie Aubuchon came up big with seven blocks and five kills. Iona Lofrano had 16 kills and six blocks while Erica Heikila tossed in 11 kills, 10 digs and perfect serving.
Kelsey Whittet contributed five kills, eight aces and two digs, Ashley Scott hustled for 28 digs and Kassidy Gutierrez was a key with six aces, 14 points served and eight digs. Michelle Wells also played well on the back line for the Falcons (13-4).
Colfax, seeded ninth, will take on top-seeded Ripon in the quarterfinals Thursday on the road.


Del Oro 3, Buhach Colony 0 at Loomis — The Golden Eagles had no trouble in their Sac-Joaquin Section Division II opener. The seventh-seeded Eagles crushed Buhach Colony 25-13, 25-16, 25-11 to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Senior Belle Obert swung for 15 kills, served two aces and 11 points and added seven digs as Del Oro improved to 27-5 on the year.
Aly Duffin had nine kills, two blocks and seven points served with one ace. Bailey Humes dished out 33 assists and had two aces in her six points served. Tatum Jungsten added seven kills and two blocks while Cassandra Palma contributed six kills.
The Eagles will face No. 2 Bella Vista Thursday in Sacramento.

Vacaville Christian 3, Forest Lake 1 at Lake of the Pines — The Falcons were ousted from the Division V pla yoffs with a 12-25, 25-11, 25-10, 25-13 loss at home.
Senior Laura Ritchart had nine kills and three blocks while senior Molly Huusfeldt added eight aces, eight assists and two kills as Forest Lake finished the season 15-10 overall.
Emily English had seven blocks and three kills, Amanda Timmerman hustled for 10 digs and Madeline Zea led in the serve-receive department for the Falcons.
Huusfeldt and Ritchart were first-team all-Central Valley Christian League selections.
