Bear River cross country team holding e-waste collection dayBy: Matthew Kimel, Journal Sports Editor
Due to budget cuts, the Bear River cross country team is hosting a free e-waste collection day in order to try to raise funds for team uniforms and a bus to the subsection meet in Angels Camp at the end of the season.
The Bruins will hold the event on Saturday, Sept. 22 in the Bear River High School parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The team has partnered with CEAR, a state approved Collector & Recycler of Electronic waste that completely shreds all hard drives at its securely monitored facility, to recycle all of the collected e-waste.
A pre-collection has already got off to a good start over the past two weeks.
On Thursday, eight cathode ray tubes, 11 flat panel monitors/laptops and a 55-inch TV were collected.
“My minivan was looking like a lowrider when I was done (collecting the items),” said Dana Coffman, a team mom, who is helping run the event.
Last year’s collection brought in a total of 1,700-plus pounds of e-waste.
Of the event’s goal, Coffman said, “We don’t have a goal other than to collect as much as possible.”
The team can accept monitors, televisions, plasma TVs, desktop and notebooks PCs, VCRs, stereo equipment, speakers, keyboards, mice, PDAs, digital cameras, zip drives, telephones, cellphones, printers, copiers, laser and multifunction scanners, fax machines, hairdryers, game consoles, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, cables, vacuums, etc.
The following items, however, cannot be accepted: household appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, etc.); furniture; hazardous household waste, including batteries, paint, pesticides, used oil, cleaning supplies, fluorescent bulbs, tires, etc.
The team recently had a cross country car wash, which raised $700.
If people can’t make it to the event, they can contact Coffman for a pre-collection pickup.
Businesses can participate as well.
