Bear River edges Oakmont in season opener

The Bear River High softball squad kicked off the season with a thrilling 6-5 win over Oakmont in nine innings Friday at Bear River. The two-time defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champions got a run in the ninth when junior Katie Mathis singled home freshman Courtney Edwards. Freshman Erin Nichol pitched the final 4 1/3 innings to get the first win of her career after relieving senior Kenzie Billings. Billings crushed a three-run homer to spark the offense in the first inning. Billings scored a run for the Bruins in the fourth on a single by Brittani Nix. Courtney Ceo scored on a sacrifice fly by Kathryn Rabak to tie the game in the sixth. BASEBALL The Placer High baseball team got off to a hot start, but couldn’t hang on to a 6-0 lead Saturday at Del Oro. The Golden Eagles fought back for a 10-7 win. Del Oro junior Cooper Johnson pitched two shutout innings to get the win after the Hillmen had scored at least one run in the first four innings. Ben Consulo was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the Eagles. Max Magleby was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs while Matt Leak, Freddy Cargile and Mason Magleby were all 2-for-4. Placer (0-2) was edged by Union Mine 4-3 on Friday despite out-hitting the Diamondbacks 7-5. SOCCER The Colfax High girls soccer team settled for fifth place at the Lincoln tournament, closing out the three-game event with a 4-0 win over Mira Loma Saturday. Brittany Talley, Chanel Filteau, Piper Lofrano and K.C. Capuchino each scored one goal against the Matadors. Josie Ruzette and Talley found the net in a 2-1 win over McClatchy on Friday as Talley came up with an assist. The Falcons fell to Vacaville 1-0 in the tournament opener Friday. Colfax will face Placer on Friday at Le Febvre Stadium in the Pioneer Valley League opener for both teams.
