Bear River girls run to sub-section crown

Bruins’ Julian, Forest Lake’s Weisman each win individual titles

ANGELS CAMP — Sophomore Denise Julian’s first-place finish paced the Bear River High girls cross country team to the Division IV title at Saturday’s Sac-Joaquin Section subsection meet at Frogtown. Julian completed the 3.06-mile course in 19 minutes, 3 seconds to lead a quartet of Bruins in the top 20. Sophomore Breanne Mitchell came in third at 19:44, followed by junior Abby Grebe (14th, 21:23) and sophomore Seaera Moe (20th, 21:44). Jennifer Marso crossed the finish line in 25th at 21:54 to round out Bear River’s top five. Here’s a school-by-school look at how other area teams did on Saturday: Del Oro The Golden Eagles’ top four runners all posted top-10 finishes as their team clinched the Division III girls crown. Emma Freeman was Del Oro’s top finisher, coming in fifth at 19:59. Fellow sophomore Caitlin Devitt-Payne was right behind her in sixth at 20:00, followed by junior Alissa Hood (eighth 20:02) and sophomore Jessie Rozario (ninth, 20:16). Junior Kelsey Seaman rounded out the Golden Eagles’ top five, coming in 19th at 20:47. Del Oro’s boys came in fourth. Senior Tyler Spangler came in 14th with a time of 17:15 to lead the Golden Eagles. Also finishing in the top 25 were sophomore Nathan Paddeck (21st, 17L34) and junior Toby Uptain-Villa (25th, 17:40). Forest Lake Christian Junior Christa Weisman won the Division V girls race handily with a time of 21:26, leading the Falcons to a second-place team finish. FLC actually tied Jim Elliot Christian for first in the girls race with 34 points, but the latter team won the tiebreaker because its fifth-place runner finished higher than the Falcons’. Weisman was the only runner in the girls race to break 22 minutes. Also placing in the top 10 for Forest Lake were senior Elyse Vierra (fifth, 24:53) and freshmen Liz Hegarty (sixth, 24:53) and Dana Ormiston (eighth, 25:47). Like the girls, Forest Lake’s boys placed second as a team. Junior Austin Violette came in second individually with a time of 17:26, followed by sophomore D.J. Unruh (seventh, 19:36), junior Seth Brainard (12th, 20:04) and senior Billy Corbin (17th, 20:54). Colfax The Falcons’ boys and girls each finished third in Division IV. Senior Michael Morgan had Colfax’s highest finish in the boys race, placing eighth at 17:22. He was followed by senior Wes Cox (16th, 17:54) and juniors Max Schopfer (18th, 18:00) and Nick Read (25th, 18:22). On the girls side, junior Sara Howard came in seventh at 20:14, followed by freshman Presley Wetterstom (ninth, 20:49) and junior Kirsten Read, (21st, 21:48). Foresthill Junior Kevin Tobin came in third in the Division V boys race, clocking in at 17:53 to help the Wildfires place fifth. Juniors Jacob Apodaca (21:10) and David Cox (21:21) came in 18th and 21st, respectively. Freshman Tyler Giles was 24th at 22:16.
