Bear River snaps El Dorado’s streak
The Bear River High baseball team jumped right back into the playoff race Friday with a thrilling 3-2 victory over El Dorado at Lake of the Pines.
Zach Welz lined a two-out hit to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Bruins the victory. The Cougars suffered their first loss in PVL play and just their second defeat of the year.
Coleman Huntley tossed a complete-game five-hitter and struck out nine to lead Bear River (5-3 Pioneer Valley League, 12-11 overall).
Welz finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Michael Lucas and Brandon Fry both had RBI-doubles. Andy Brooding was 1-for-3 and scored the winning run after stealing second base in the seventh.
Whitney 14, Placer 4 — The Hillmen fell to fourth place in the PVL as the Wildcats erupted early and extended their lead throughout the game.
Placer (5-4-1 PVL) will need wins over El Dorado and Lincoln this week to make the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
Senior Matt Ryan was 2-for-4 to pace Placer. Josh Klem had one hit and one RBI while Cameron Southward and Michael Reale added one RBI apiece.
