Bear River tennis edges out Colfax

In a match that came down to Bear River winning two of three tiebreakers, the Bruins edged host Colfax 5-4 Thursday afternoon. Colfax’s Josh Parker defeated Shanbar Johal in straight sets at No. 1 boys singles, while Falcons teammate Justin Witt downed Max Monroe 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2. Bear River swept the girls singles. Lindsey Harter beat Laura Zajac 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 and Emily Jacinto held off Rachel Fritz 6-2, 6-3. The Bruins notched a key win at No. 1 boys doubles. Greg Macateer and Steve Betcher edged Kevin McCollum and Bret Brian 7-6 (10-7), 5-7. Alex Bolt and Dan Miller of the Bruins beat Alec Hopkins and John Bianchi 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2. Bear River won another big tiebreaker at No. 1 girls doubles. Chelsea Conley and Emilie Garber defeated Erin Katsura and Carissa Millanes 4-6, 6-4 (10-7). Colfax won the final two doubles matches. Katy Jenkins and Kristen Kelly beat Ali Bergman and Lauren Wells 6-2, 3-6 (10-2) at No. 2. Eric Graves and Jessica Sanchez downed Conner Phillips and Shelby Carrow 6-2, 6-2 in mixed doubles. The Falcons fell to 1-2 in the Pioneer Valley League. Both losses were decided by one match. Placer 9, Mesa Verde 0 — The host Hillmen dominated throughout in improving to 2-0 in the PVL. Andy Riggs and Dan Fraguglia won their respective boys singles matches in straight sets, as did Cameron McCallister and Dan Ragusano at No. 1 boys doubles and Marco Barela and Brad Ray at No. 2. Amelia Arnold was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 1 girls singles and Tori Winters won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Amy VanGroningen and Bailey Bill won 7-6 (4), 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Lacey Reese and Dani Ferretti won 2-6, 6-3 (10-7) at No. 2. Diego Gajardo and Erin Babich teamed up for a 6-2, 6-3 mixed doubles victory. Forest Lake Christian 7, Highlands 2 at North Highlands — The Falcons dropped both boys singles matches by narrow margins while improving to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the Central Valley Christian League. Caitlin Hanson won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 girls singles and Jen Menary was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 2. Ally Weir and Amanda Timmerman teamed up for a 10-8 victory at No. 1 girls doubles. Courtney Turner and Holly McClain won 10-4 at No. 2. Nathan Burnett and Colin Rafter were 10-8 winners at No. 1 boys doubles while Troy Douglas and Jordan Farewell won their first set at No. 2 before their opponents retired. Tony Nicosia and Chelsea White won mixed doubles by forfeit. Del Oro 9, Nevada Union 0 at Grass Valley — Paul Villa and Brandt Steinmetz were straight-set winners at No. 3 doubles at the Golden Eagles routed the Miners in boys action to improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Sierra Foothill League. Brett Bacharach (6-2, 6-0), Charlie Wyatt (6-1, 6-0), Andrew Milton (6-1, 6-2) and Brandon Bailey (6-1, 6-1) cruised through their respective top four singles matches. Garrett Dahlin won 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and Taylor Reiss prevailed 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 at No. 6. Taylor Carrington and Nick Koop were 6-1, 6-2 victors at No. 1 doubles. Matt Hanson and Travis Denna teamed up to win 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.
