Bear River topples Escalon, advances to final
The Bear River High volleyball team is making a run at making its already historic season even sweeter.
The Bruins stunned top-seeded Escalon 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 19-25, 15-12 on the road Tuesday night to advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship match. The Bruins will take on Union Mine on Thursday at 6 p.m. at UC Davis.
Bear River won the Pioneer Valley League title this year for its first league banner since 1998. The Bruins also won the Division III section title in ’98.
“We got the first two games and we were kind of riding high,” Bear River coach Matt McDonald said. “We made some plays in the third and fourth games, but they just outplayed us. They played unbelievable. It’s the first time we’ve gone to five games all year and we just really composed ourselves because we were rattled.”
Junior Sara Schell was tremendous, finishing with 21 kills. Kirsten Pereira and Katie Tomkiewicz had 12 kills each and Kaya Johnson dished out 47 assists. Amanda Clark came up with back-to-back kills in the final game and Teryn Rath had two big blocks to help the cause.
El Camino 3, Del Oro 0 at Sacramento — The Golden Eagles’ season ended in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinals as top-seeded El Camino roared to a 25-9, 25-10, 25-13 victory at home.
“They got on top early and they just beat us,” Del Oro coach Stu Kageta said. “They put pressure on us and we didn’t respond.”
Del Oro junior Morgan Lees had seven kills and nine digs. She was also 10-for-11 serving with one ace. Megan Hentschke had 12 digs and Stephanie Solich added four kills and 10 digs for the Golden Eagles.
Del Oro finished the season 20-11.
