Bear River like, totally takes on the radical ’80s in musical

-A +A
Bear River High School presents its first large-scale musical in 10 years, “Back to the ’80s: The Totally Awesome Musical.” “The show is an Australian import, similar in style to ‘Mamma Mia,’ in that the playwright, Neil Gooding, wrote the storyline around existing chart-topping hits from the 1980s,” said director Amy Linden. The show tells the story of the senior class (class of the 1980s) of William Ocean High School, as remembered and seen through the eyes of Corey Palmer, who is now in his late 30s. Then 17-year-old Corey is madly in love with his next-door neighbor, Tiffany Houston, one of the coolest girls in school. But Tiffany is too busy mooning over the hottest guy around, Michael Feldman, to notice Corey.  Throw in a “Star Wars” dream sequence, high-energy dance routines, copious amounts of blue eye-shadow, 20 cans of hairspray, radical ’80s clothes, as well as some of the most popular songs ever written, and the result is a musical that will delight and amuse an audience of any age. The 27-member cast is thrilled to bring a musical to the stage at Bear River and hopes there will be more to follow. Sophomore Connery Nickerson plays “Cyndi Gibson,” the stuck-up material girl of the school.  “I’ve been waiting for the chance to do a musical and this is a really good experience,” she said. “It’s so much fun.” Remaining shows are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Bruin Community Performing Arts Theater, 11130 Magnolia Drive, Grass Valley.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students, children and seniors over 60.  Reserve advanced tickets by calling (530) 268-3700, ext. 4616.
