Two-dollar tacos really add up. Maria’s Mexican Tacos had quite the busy Monday, reports owner Maria Moreno, who kept her Auburn restaurant open on what’s normally a day off and served tacos. After the last $2 taco was served Monday, Moreno had brought in $1,537 cash — $1,300 in food sales and $237 in tips — for the New Hope in Haiti orphanage Claire Bryditzki, the 7-year-old rescued from a post-earthquake Haiti by her adoptive parents in Auburn, came from. “I think it’s beautiful, and I’m very proud of Auburn,” Moreno said Tuesday. Food-friendly fundraiser are successful because you give and you also get, walking away with a happy heart as well as a full stomach. Local organizations aim to bank on this idea in order to bring in funds for their causes. Denise Cardona, owner of Kids Closet, is helping coordinate a pasta feed benefiting Child Hope International and Haitian earthquake relief. The pasta feed will be held 3-7 p.m. Feb. 6 at Auburn’s Masonic Hall, 956 ½ Lincoln Way. “I think the idea was to partner with a community in Haiti that was in desperate need,” Cardona said. “Partnering with this orphanage is our community helping their community.” Cardona hopes to serve up to 700 pasta dinners that day. Auburn Masons are donating the food and their kitchen skills. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children and $20 for a family of four, and include pasta, sourdough and salad. The Placer County Sheriff Honor Guard has organized a fundraiser Saturday. Eat at Chevy’s, 2100 Highway 49, that day, give the server a coupon and 25 percent of the food bill goes to the honor guard, which will help honor guard members in their quest to attend National Police Week in Washington, D.C. Get your hands on coupons by calling (530) 889-7800. The Placer School for Adults technology program has scheduled two similar fundraisers at Chevy’s, to be held 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 27 and March 27. Coupons are available at the Placer School for Adults, 390 Finley St., and can also be found printed in the Placer School for Adults Spring 2010 catalog. Call (530) 885-8585 to learn more.
