Big rig driver faces up to year in jail for roadside death

The driver of a semi-truck that struck and killed a man on Interstate 80 near Newcastle pleaded no contest to a manslaughter charge Monday. Lakhwinder Sidhu, 35, of Ontario, Canada, is scheduled for sentencing in Placer County Superior Court Aug. 6. In April 2008, Sidhu’s big rig truck drifted to the shoulder of the road and killed a man who was outside his vehicle. Sidhu is facing probation to one year in the Placer County Jail after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of manslaughter without gross negligence. Miguel Ramos, 42, of Bakersfield was killed April 11, 2008, in the accident that occurred on eastbound Interstate 80 near the Newcastle exit. Ramos had pulled off the roadway because of trouble with his vehicle, according to Placer County Deputy District Attorney Matt Block. - Staff report
