Democrat Sen. Ted Lieu’s bill to prohibit “live animal sales on any street, highway, public right-of-way, parking lot, carnival, or boardwalk” received bipartisan support and was recently signed into law by Gov. (Jerry) Brown. Often these animals are victims of neglect and abuse by the people breeding them for sale. Not only will this law protect animals from inhumane treatment, it also protects consumers. The new law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2012. We applaud Gov. Brown for his humane leadership. Be sure to report animal abuse to your local humane society, sheriff or animal control center.
