Body found -- ‘possible homicide’
A dead body was found off the side of a road near Old Town Auburn Tuesday morning, according to a press release issued by the Auburn Police Department.
The press release, sent to the Journal Tuesday evening, stated the body was found on the 100 block of Park Street in the Old Town Auburn area.
Neither the identity of the body nor the manner of death were specified in the press release as the investigation is ongoing.
According to the press release, the body is that of a black male in his mid-20s or 30s. The release also states the death is being investigated as a possible homicide.
Many people in Old Town Auburn businesses interviewed Tuesday night were unaware that a dead body was found or that an investigation was under way.
Stan Jennings, who has lived on the 100 block of Park Street for 15 years, said Tuesday night he saw Auburn Police Department members and fire officials on his street with a dog earlier in the day.
Jennings also said some transients wander on Park Street occasionally and he was questioned by police.
"They asked me if I heard any gunshots or vehicles speeding off or people running in the night," Jennings said. "I stay up until 3 in the morning most nights, so I was shocked I didn't hear anything."
In all the years that he has lived on Park Street, Jennings said he has never felt unsafe or that anything similar to a possible homicide has ever happened in the past.
"I told the police that a lot of transients walk up and down the street sometimes, but I was surprised because in actuality, it's pretty safe over here," Jennings said.
Anyone with information about the dead body found Tuesday morning should call Detective McLaughlin at the Auburn Police Department at (530) 823-4237.
