Bruins pull out tie against Falcons
The Bear River High soccer team did what no other Pioneer Valley League team had done this season on Tuesday and put a slight blemish on Colfax’s spotless record.
The Bruins tied the Falcons 1-1 as Janelle Jensen found the Colfax net in the first half. Colfax hadn’t given up a goal in PVL play. Roseville’s two goal on March 7 were the only other scores surrendered by the Falcons this season.
Katy Thomas put Colfax on top in the 10th minute, converting on an assist from Amy Blackburn. Jensen tied the game in the 22nd minute.
Colfax out-shot Bear River 34-5, but could not come up with the game-winner. The Falcons fell to 3-0-1 in the PVL heading into a showdown with undefeated Lincoln on Thursday at home. Goalkeeper Michallynn Hoffman came up with four saves. Sofia Satterlee, Emilee Klug and Brittany Thomas were outstanding on defense for Colfax.
The Bruins moved to 2-1-1 in the PVL.
In junior varsity play Colfax defeated Bear River 11-0 as Katie Garcia led the way with a hat trick.
Lincoln 1, Placer 0 at Lincoln — The Hillgals hung tough with the Zebras on the road despite playing 70 minutes with 10 players after an early red card.
Lincoln (3-0 PVL) got its goal in the 10th minute on a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box by a Placer player, who was sent off.
Placer (1-2 PVL) got fine play from freshman Sarah Rowland, senior Caitlin Letcher and junior Alexandra Lee, along with freshman goalkeeper Kyra Hostetler.
Ponderosa 4, Forest Lake 1 at Shingle Springs — The Falcons dropped a non-league contest despite a goal from Morghan Koch and an assist from Emily English.
Stephanie Herron had 12 saves for Forest Lake, but the visitors could not rally from a 3-0 halftime deficit.
Del Oro 198, Rocklin 206 at Whitney Oaks — The Golden Eagles posted their first road win over the Thunder in 13 years as senior Austin Smotherman led the way with a 1-under-par 35.
Junior Justin Raskin was close behind with a 37 as Del Oro improved to 3-1 in the Sierra Foothill League. Bobby Mullen carded a 43, Louie Euer added a 43 and Ryan Takayama posted a 50.
Forest Lake 268, Victory 323 at DarkHorse — Jeremy Lanz fired a 10-over-par 46 and the Falcons improved to 3-1 in the Central Valley California League.
Michael Williamson shot a 49, Raymond Bae fired a 55 and Jake Reinhart and Kaley McClelland both finished at 59 for Forest Lake.
Placer 8, Center 1 — The Hillmen dominated another PVL foe as top singles players Steven Fraguglia and Tine Humble both remained unbeaten on the season.
Blair Meyer and Claire McInerney added wins in singles action. Derek Ikeda and Logan Thompson won their No. 2 doubles match. Romy Benhova and Lindsey Holden were winners at No. 1 girls doubles. Tawny Thompson and Bronte Haskins cruised in their No. 2 doubles match.
Kyle Fontes and Jessie Fry won a 6-0, 6-4 decision in mixed doubles as Placer improved to 5-0 in the PVL.
