I see in the Auburn Journal that city and county officials are requesting federal funds and a permanent federal managing agency to help save the Auburn State Recreation Area (Journal, Jan. 21). Now, I am staunchly in favor of these and all other efforts to save and maintain the ASRA, a vital resource for us all. We should absolutely do whatever it takes. But I must confess, I’m confused. According to recent election results, a majority of people in Placer and El Dorado counties, and nearly all of their elected officials, say they are for slashing federal expenditures to the bone and drastically reducing the number and size of government agencies. Gosh, seems a little inconsistent, doesn’t it? Does this apply only to expenditures and services that don’t affect them? Carole Wade, Cool
